Rains strand 2,000 tourist | Machu Picchu ruins
Lima, Peru – Heavy rains and land slides in Peru have blocked the train on the way to the ancient incana fortress of Machu Picchu, stranding about 2,000 tourists.
Peru Rail spokeswoman Soledad Caparo says rail operator suspended service on Monday and are working to remove stones and mud covering the track.
Rail is the only means of transportation on the last part of the trip to Machu Picchu from the city of Cuzco.
Tourism Minister Martin Perez says that the government can send two helicopters evacuate tourists and locals from Machu Picchu Pueblo, the town next to the castle.
Heavy rain has hit the region over the past three days.
Floods and land slides have killed people and damaged stone walls of the archaeological sites.
