Ames Iowa Flooding
Widespread flooding due to heavy rains Wednesday morning in Ames, central Iowa, has broken records set by the city in 1993. The office of city manager warned that the flood level may be “unprecedented in some areas.” Squaw Creek in 1993 broke the historical record that culminated in the summit’s 18.8 feet. The Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to start shortly after sunset on August 12, and there should be as little as one shooting star every hour. The shower actually started on July 17th but has been scattered and won’t pick up in intensity until August 12th and 13th. The showers are mostly visible in the Northern Hemisphere, so chances are you’re going to see some meteor action if you happen to venture outside at night. Take a chair or recliner and prepare to watch the skies for at least 1/2 hour. The best time to view them is in the early evening when the crescent moon sets and just before dawn.
